Sad
news from TMZ.com: Captain Phil
Harris has passed away. His family
states "It
is with great sadness that we say
goodbye to our dad, Captain Phil Harris.
Dad has always been a fighter and
continued to be until the end. For us
and the crew, he was someone who never
backed down. We will remember and
celebrate that strength. Thanks to
everyone for their thoughts and
prayers."
From
The Loon's Justin Klinghagen, who had
the priveledge of interviewing Phil
numerous times:
"After
having the privilege to interview Phil
on a few occasions and talking with him
more times "off air" than "on air", I
can tell you that I have been one of the
lucky ones to get to know Phil Harris.
Far more people have been lucky enough
to have known him in person, and they
should feel blessed. He was as genuine
as it gets. Often times, celebrities
are ego-ridden and flighty. Not Phil.
He was like any guy that you would meet;
doing his job and trying to provide for
a family. He was the type of guy you
would sit next to at the local pub and
shoot the breeze with about anything,
and everything in life. No matter the
conversation, he would never volunteer
his tens of thousands of fans he has or
agents, royalties, autograph signings,
or who he has rubbed elbows with. That,
to me, is so commendable.
What I shared most with him is that he
understood what it meant to be humbled.
Phil shared a story with me about an
experience where his father got wrecked
at sea (consequently having no
directional equipment) and as Phil
started to get funeral arrangements made
with the family of the crew of his Dad's
boat there was a call from the Harbor
Master. The Harbor Master spotted his
Dad's boat coming in through the fog,
guided only by the sun, moon, and luck.
If you listen to the interview, you can
hear the emotion in his voice and the
reverence for "the old way of doing
things". As a fan of the show, there is
another boat I've seen starts out every
episode going by a cliff where they
shoot off fireworks in homage to their
father's burial place. It is so evident
that the "Deadliest Catch" is not just a
hit show on Discovery Channel, but the
truth. A truth that is evident to it's
featured "superstars" that gets into a
family's blood. I respect Phil for
being an icon for his children, just as
his father was to him. I pray for
Phil's family and I pray for my friend
that he and his Dad have found each
other in the great beyond."
In
honor of Phil, here's all of our audio.
